The Vietnam Prisoner of War story is unlike any other in American history. While cutoff from the outside world for years on end, these valiant warriors endured unimaginable torture and solitary confinement. There were 735 American military and 70 civilian POW’s held captive during the war. 73 military, and nine civilians died while in captivity. All told, 723 U.S. military and civilian POW’s were either released or escaped from the hellish conditions of the many prison camps in Vietnam, with the majority of POW’s released during OPERATION HOMECOMING from February 12th thru April 1st, 1973.
